What Is An AirJoi Bamboo Air Purifier Bag?

AirJoi is a company that makes activated bamboo charcoal air purifier bags. Activated bamboo charcoal is regular bamboo charcoal that has been processed in such a way to create a lot of pores within the bamboo. As air passes through the pores, pollutants get trapped while the air continues to pass through. This results in cleaner air.

Activated bamboo charcoal has been studied in laboratory settings, but there is little to no information on how they work in our homes. Further, there is even less data on the effectiveness of the AirJoi air purifier bags in our homes.

With this in mind, we ran some tests to figure out if the Airjoi bags really work and how to best use them.

Do AirJoi Bamboo Charcoal Bags Really Work?

AirJoi bamboo charcoal air purifier bags were effective at cleaning the air of various pollutants under the right conditions. They were effective at removing VOCs, odors, and particulates in the short and long term.

VOCs

Overall, I found AirJoi is able to remove VOCs in a small space in just an hour or so. The effect wasn’t very large, but still noticeable.

VOCs or volatile organic compounds come from a number of sources within our homes. Some common sources include paint, furniture, sealants, rugs, and carpeting. This means we are often surrounded by sources of VOCs. Even after they dissipate, you may still have paints, sealants, and other VOC emitting products in your home.

To test out the effectiveness of the AirJoi bamboo charcoal bags on VOC removal, I left a can of primer paint open in a small box alongside an Airthings Air Quality Monitor. The level of VOCs in the box quickly shot up to extremely high levels. I then waited several hours for the connection to level off. Then, I put the AirJoi into the box and record the results.

The AirJoi was able to bring levels of VOCs back down into an acceptable health range. Interestingly, once I removed the AirJoi from the box, the level of VOCs went back up. They didn’t go quite as high as when I originally removed the lid on the paint can, but still were in a range considered to be in need of ventilation.

This gives us two strong indicators that the AirJoi is able to remove VOCs from the air in both the short and long-term in a small space.

Also, many cleaning products create high levels of VOCs in our homes. We found that conventional cleaning products create high levels of VOCs. On the other hand, the non-toxic, all-purpose cleaner Force of Nature, caused almost no detectable increase in VOCs.

In addition the AirJoi was able to help control VOC levels from conventional cleaners. If you are trying to improve the air quality in your home, consider switching to an eco-friendly cleaner and/or making use of AirJoi.

Odors

We all have bad odors in our homes from time to time. To remove these smells, we often turn to solutions such as opening windows or using some sort of air freshener. However, the air quality outside can sometimes be worse than inside or it can be too cold out to open windows.

In addition, air freshener sprays contain chemicals that are known to make air quality worse. They are also bad for the environment.

The AirJoi offers a solution to this problem because it’s able to remove odors without any chemical use. In our tests, the Airjoi was able to remove bad odors from a sneaker in under one hour. At first, both sneakers smelled bad. I rated them at about 5/10 in terms of how bad the smell was.

It wasn’t the worst, but not something I wanted lingering in my home. After leaving the AirJoi bamboo charcoal bag in the shoe for one hour it had a noticeable better smell. I’d rate the new smell at about 8/10, with only minor “shoe smell” remaining.

In contrast, the other shoe still had a bad smell of about 5/10. Of course, this is a subjective statement, but in my opinion the smell was significantly better. Actually, I was also able to collect a bit of data here. The particulates in the smelly shoe were much higher than the deodorized shoe. It’s possible that particulates are the very molecules that we detect as bad odor. The Airjoi was able to capture these particulates and make the shoe smell better.

On a related note, charcoal air purifiers are used in other applications for controlling odors such as indoor compost bins.

Particulates

In addition to reducing the concentration of particulates that may have been causing bad odors, the AirJoi was able to control particulates from the Canadian wildfires. However, it should be noted this was only in a small enclosed space and was not an effective strategy for a larger area such as a living room.

With that said, the Airjoi bamboo charcoal bags are not intended for use to purify an entire home, or even an entire room. Like any other product, they have a specific use.
